A thousand acres of Loudoun County.
Boxwood gardens, wrought-iron gates, a Greek Revival mansion. And two people who knew exactly
how to fill all of it. This is Sarah and Ike
at Morven Park.

Morven Park sits just outside Leesburg on 1,000 acres of historic Loudoun County estate — and it photographs the way a place does when it was built to be looked at. Formal boxwood gardens, a secluded reflecting pond tucked behind the magnolia trees, the stone portico and white columns of the Davis Mansion, wrought-iron gates anchoring brick-lined paths, and the checkerboard tile terrace on the mansion's south side that offers one of the most graphic, clean backdrops of any engagement location in Northern Virginia. It's a venue that rewards couples willing to move through it — every hundred yards, something new.

Sarah and Ike arrived on one of those quietly perfect late-season days — sky running soft and overcast with the sun pushing through in intervals, the kind of light that needs no management. Sarah was in a white dress with a delicate shawl; Ike in a sharp black suit with a black cowboy hat — a detail that suited him completely and brought an easy, unforced confidence to the portraits. We moved through the formal gardens first, then down to the pond, across the mansion's front steps and stone portico, and finished on that checkerboard tile floor where the geometry of the space and the two of them together just clicked. The property did what Morven Park does best: gave us a dozen distinct environments and stayed out of the way.

What makes this estate
photograph the way it does.

"After 16 years and 350+ weddings across destinations ranging from Hawaii and the Cayman Islands to right here in the DMV — what I appreciate most about Morven Park is that it never asks you to work around it. The light, the architecture, the landscape — they all cooperate. What you're left with as a photographer is the rare freedom to just focus on the two people in front of you. That's where the real images come from."
