Northern Virginia Engagement Photographer
If you're getting married in Northern Virginia — or just want engagement photos that actually look like the two of you —
I've photographed couples across the world, from Hawaii and Italy to DC and Northern Virginia, and this region holds some of my favorite shooting spots anywhere: the cobblestone streets of Old Town Alexandria, the vineyard rows and mountain views of Loudoun County, and the wide-open cinematic fields at Manassas Battlefield.
Whatever your vibe — laid-back and adventurous, romantic and polished, or somewhere in between — there's a Northern Virginia location that fits.
Engagement sessions are also one of my favorite ways to get to know couples before their wedding day. If you're planning a Northern Virginia wedding, working together on your engagement session first means by the time your wedding day arrives, the camera feels completely natural. It makes a real difference.

FAQ
Q: Where do you recommend for engagement sessions in Northern Virginia?
A: It depends on what kind of images you want. Old Town Alexandria is ideal for an urban, editorial feel — cobblestone streets, waterfront, classic DC-adjacent charm. Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna is the go-to for lush spring color. Morven Park in Leesburg offers historic estate grounds, formal boxwood gardens, and the Davis Mansion. Manassas National Battlefield is the choice for something cinematic — nearly 5,000 acres of open terrain and golden-hour fields unlike anything else in the region. I've shot extensively at all of these and can help you find the right fit.
Q: Do Northern Virginia engagement sessions require photography permits?
A: It depends on the location, and I handle this as part of session planning. Manassas Battlefield requires no permit for small groups under the 2025 EXPLORE Act. Morven Park requires a free permit booked 48 hours in advance. Meadowlark requires a paid permit. Old Town Alexandria's public streets and waterfront require nothing. I confirm current requirements before every session so there are no surprises.
Q: What's the best time of year for an engagement session in Northern Virginia?
A: Mid-October through early November is the strongest window — fall foliage peaks, the light angle drops, golden hour runs long, and the air is clear in a way summer humidity won't allow. Late April through May is a close second, especially for garden locations like Meadowlark and Morven Park. Summer sessions work well scheduled 90 minutes before sunset. Winter has a quiet, sculptural quality worth considering at the right location.
Q: How long does a Northern Virginia engagement session take, and how far do you travel?
A: Most sessions run 60–90 minutes across two or three spots within a single property. Two full wardrobe changes across multiple locations takes closer to two hours. I'm based in New Market, Maryland and travel throughout the entire DMV with no travel fees within the region. I've also shot destination sessions in Hawaii, the Bahamas, Italy, and Ireland for couples who want something further afield.
Q: What should we wear for our Northern Virginia engagement session?
A: Let the location drive the palette. Old Town rewards elevated looks — tailored blazers, midi dresses, navy and earth tones against red brick. Meadowlark and Morven Park suit softer, romantic palettes — blush, sage, warm neutrals. Manassas is versatile enough for both a dressed-up first look and a relaxed second outfit. I send a detailed style guide after booking and am always happy to review outfit photos before your session.
Q: Do you shoot engagement sessions for couples who aren't booking you for their wedding?
A: Yes — standalone sessions are available and welcome. That said, most couples book their engagement session as part of their wedding package, and the advantage is real: by wedding day I already know how you move and what you're comfortable with. Fall and spring availability fills quickly — if you have a specific date or location in mind, reaching out early is always the right call.
